Shaun Taylor
Ngāti Toa Rangatira, Ngāti Raukawa

Shaun Taylor is a contemporary Māori artist who draws on the tools and techniques of our tūpuna to tell the stories of today. His practice is grounded in whakapapa and guided by tikanga, blending ancestral knowledge with modern forms to reflect the lived experiences, aspirations, and resilience of te iwi Māori.

From whakairo rākau (wood carving) and whakairo pounamu (greenstone carving) to painting and digital design, Shaun’s work acts as a bridge between generations—honouring the past while speaking boldly to the present.

Whakamārama
This design is inspired by the traditional Pūhoro pattern—a motif born from the taiao, and one which in turn reconnects us to it. The Pūhoro has deep associations with the moana, with water, and with movement.

This particular design speaks to the journey of navigating turbulent seas in pursuit of one’s destination. It reflects the struggle and perseverance required to move forward through demanding and often unforgiving waters. The flowing lines represent not just physical momentum, but the emotional and spiritual tides that rise and fall on the path of self-improvement.

It is a visual story of resilience, determination, and growth—of confronting challenges head-on and emerging stronger.
